INFORMATION:
Why is it important to express colostrum and what are the benefits?
Colostrum is the first form of breastmilk your baby will drink. It is a thick, sticky, yellowish liquid, high in calories and low in quantity. Colostrum is high in antibodies and antioxidants and is important to build a strong immune system for your baby. Your baby only needs a few milliliters per feed.
Building up a supply of colostrum is useful in case your baby needs extra feeds due to sugar levels dropping or if you are on strong medication and are unable to breastfeed your baby. This will eliminate the need to offer formula, rather offer your baby stored colostrum. It is also handy to have stored colostrum if you know your baby will need special care or if you may be separated from your baby.
Colostrum changes to breastmilk within a couple of days after your baby is born. You only have limited time to express this amazing liquid gold your breasts have produced.
You can express twice per day usually once in the morning and once in the evenings for about 2-3 minutes per breast.
Starting this journey you may express only a few drops of colostrum however this is not an indication of how your supply will be or your ability to breastfeed your baby.
IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER:
• You can start your colostrum expressing journey from 36-37 weeks gestation. You are required to discuss any concerns or risks with your Midwife or Obstetrician.
• You should only hand express colostrum and NEVER use a pump of ANY sort during pregnancy.
• Please seek help and support for further education from an experienced breastfeeding professional or an IBCLC.
• If you experience any sort of contractions or vaginal bleeding, you should STOP expressing immediately and contact your Midwife or Obstetrician.
• Remember that any amount of colostrum will be beneficial to your baby.
